The base of the Panamanian food is rice very often prepared with coconut milk and accompanied with lentils or beans. one can also find typical dishes of Latin America (tamales, tortillas, torrejas) as well as plantain bananas cooked in different ways (patacones or in slices).
The most consumed meats are roasted chicken and beef. The proximity of both its oceans allows eating easily fish (corvina, pargo) as well as seafood. As a starter one cannot miss the delicious Panamanian Sancocho, soup based on
hen, yam and herbs, as well as the Ceviche, raw fish marinated in lemon, with onions, pepper (although it originates in Peru, it is quite common in Panama).
In the High Lands, one will find coffe trees estates, smoked meat (tasajo), West Indian food towards the Caribbean and sea food products in the various archipelagos (fish, sea food, lobsters o still centollo crabs).
In the big cities, due to the big cultural Panamanian blending, one will find a great variety of restaurants, whether local or international. |
